Collocations that score

IELTS examiners don't count words — they listen for natural word combinations. "Have a big effect" is understood. "Have a profound impact" gets you Band 7. These are the high-value collocations across the five Part 3 topics, with French equivalents and traps to avoid.

Education

"play a crucial role in"jouer un role crucial dans
"Education plays a crucial role in social mobility."
"foster critical thinking"developper l'esprit critique
"Schools should foster critical thinking, not just memorisation."
"broaden one's horizons"elargir ses horizons
"Studying abroad really broadens your horizons."
Warning: "formation" is NOT always "training". "Ma formation" = "my educational background", not "my training".

Technology

"have a profound impact on"avoir un impact profond sur
"AI has had a profound impact on how businesses operate."
"bridge the digital divide"combler la fracture numerique
"Governments need to bridge the digital divide in rural areas."
"raise ethical concerns"soulever des preoccupations ethiques
"Facial recognition technology raises serious ethical concerns."
Warning: "raise" not "make" or "create" — concerns are raised.

Environment

"address climate change"faire face au changement climatique
"We need to address climate change at a global level."
Warning: "address" not "resolve" or "fix" — climate change is an issue you address.
"pose a significant threat to"representer une menace importante pour
"Deforestation poses a significant threat to biodiversity."

Health

"a sedentary lifestyle"un mode de vie sedentaire
"A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of chronic illness."
Warning: pronounce SED-uhn-tree, not sed-on-TAIR.
"mental wellbeing"bien-etre mental
"The pandemic highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing."

Society

"social mobility"mobilite sociale
"Education is often seen as the key driver of social mobility."
"tackle the root causes"s'attaquer aux causes profondes
"To reduce crime, we need to tackle the root causes like poverty and inequality."
Warning: "tackle" collocates with causes, issues, problems — not "fix the real reasons".
