Joseph: How was the networking event?
Sana: Terrible. I stood in the corner holding my glass and didn't talk to anyone for the first 30 minutes.
Joseph: Classic. What stopped you?
Sana: Everyone was already in groups. I didn't know how to join a conversation.
Joseph: Here's the trick — look for groups of three. Two people in deep conversation are hard to interrupt. Three or more have gaps. Walk up, make eye contact with one person, and wait for a natural pause. Then: "Mind if I join you?" or just "Hi, I'm Sana."
Sana: That simple?
Joseph: That simple. Nobody at a networking event wants to be exclusive. They're there to meet people. The other option: stand near the drinks or food table. Everyone goes there eventually, and it's natural to start chatting: "Have you tried the wine? It's actually not bad."
Sana: OK, I eventually talked to someone. But I panicked when they asked "So, what do you do?" I said "I am an architect in a company of construction."
Joseph: Two fixes. "I'm an architect" — not "I am an." And "construction company" — not "company of construction." English puts the category before the noun. But more importantly — don't just state your job title. Give them something to respond to: "I'm an architect — I design sustainable buildings for the public sector." Now they have a follow-up question.
Sana: What if I don't know what to ask them?
Joseph: Three questions that work every time: "What brings you here?" "What do you do?" and "How long have you been in the industry?" People love talking about themselves. Your job is to ask, listen, and react genuinely.
Sana: And exchanging contacts? I just said "Goodbye, it was nice" and left.
Joseph: You missed the close! Before you leave someone, say: "It was really great talking to you. Would you like to connect on LinkedIn?" or "Here's my card — I'd love to continue this conversation." Then follow up within 48 hours with a short message: "Great meeting you at [event]. I enjoyed our conversation about [topic]."
Sana: Follow up within 48 hours. After that they forget who you are?
Joseph: Exactly. The networking doesn't happen at the event — it happens in the follow-up. The event is just the introduction.
