Saying No to Plans Without Being Rude

The problem

In French, declining is relatively straightforward: "Non, je ne peux pas ce soir" — done. English social culture requires more cushioning. A flat "no" sounds cold. But over-explaining sounds like you're lying. The sweet spot: a short reason + a future alternative.

Soft declines

"I'd love to, but I can't tonight."
J'adorerais, mais je ne peux pas ce soir.
→ Shows you WANT to, but can't. The "I'd love to" softens the no.
"Maybe next time? I've got something on tonight."
La prochaine fois peut-être ? J'ai quelque chose de prévu ce soir.
"I've got something on" = I'm busy. Vague on purpose — you don't owe details.
"I'm going to have to pass this time."
Je vais devoir passer mon tour cette fois.
"Pass" = decline casually. "This time" implies you'll come next time.

Leaving early

"I'm going to head off — early start tomorrow."
Je vais y aller — je commence tôt demain.
"Head off" = leave. "Early start" is the universally accepted excuse.
"This has been great, but I should get going."
C'était super, mais je devrais y aller.
Compliment + exit. Nobody will be offended.

Saying yes enthusiastically

"I'm up for it!" / "Count me in!" / "Sounds great — where are we going?"
Je suis partant(e) ! / Comptez sur moi !
More natural than "Yes, I accept." Show energy.

Common mistake

"No." — too blunt for social invitations. Always cushion: "I'd love to, but..." Also avoid over-explaining: "No, because my mother-in-law is visiting and I need to cook dinner and also I have a headache" — one short reason is enough. Long explanations sound like excuses.
