Motivation in English vs French

French managers motivate through logic and structure — "Les objectifs sont clairs, les moyens sont là, au travail." English-speaking teams respond more to recognition, purpose, and inclusion. The language you use as a manager shapes how your team feels.

Recognition

"I just want to acknowledge the work you've put into this."
Je voulais juste reconnaître le travail que tu as fourni.
Specific recognition. Not "good job" — what exactly was good and why it mattered.
"The way you handled that client situation was impressive."

Specific praise with impact. They know exactly what to repeat.

Purpose

"What you're working on directly impacts our biggest client relationship."

Inclusion

"I'd love to get your input on this before we decide."

Asking for input = respect. Even if you've already decided, asking first makes people feel valued.
"What do you think the best approach would be?"

Gives them ownership of the solution. They're more committed to plans they helped create.

During tough times

Common mistake

French speakers under-praise. They think good work should be expected, not celebrated. In English-speaking teams, lack of recognition = demotivation. You don't need to be over-the-top — specific, genuine praise once a week transforms a team.
