Virtual meetings have their own language

Remote meetings use phrases that don't exist in face-to-face meetings. "Let's take this offline," "I'll drop the link in the chat," "Can everyone see my screen?" — these are the phrases of modern work. French speakers often translate directly from in-person French, which sounds odd on video calls.

Opening

"Can everyone hear me OK?" — Tout le monde m'entend bien ?
Always check audio first. Standard opener for every video call.
"Let's give it another minute for people to join." — Attendons encore une minute que tout le monde se connecte.
Polite way to wait for latecomers without calling them out.

During the meeting

"I'll share my screen." / "Can you see my screen?"
Je partage mon écran. / Vous voyez mon écran ?
Always confirm after sharing. Presenting to yourself for 5 minutes is a classic remote fail.
"I'll drop the link in the chat." — Je mets le lien dans le chat.
"Drop" = put/share casually. Very common remote phrase.
"Let's take this offline." — Discutons-en en dehors de cette réunion.

Always follow up a remote meeting with written action items. People forget faster without physical presence.
"I think that's a wrap — thanks everyone." — Je pense que c'est tout — merci à tous.
"That's a wrap" = we're done. Casual but clear. Everyone can leave.

Common mistakes

"I will present my screen" → "I'll share my screen." "Present" is for presentations, "share" is for screens. "Can I say something?" on mute for 30 seconds without realising → always check your mute button before speaking. And never say "You're muted" to yourself when nobody can hear you — unmute first, then say "Sorry, I was on mute."
