Why asking matters
French professionals often wait to be told what's wrong. In English-speaking workplaces, proactively asking for feedback signals maturity and ambition. It also gives you control — you choose when and what to ask about.
Asking your manager
"I'd appreciate your feedback on how I handled the client meeting."
J'apprécierais votre retour sur la façon dont j'ai géré la réunion client.
Specific topic. Not "How am I doing?" which is too vague to answer.
"Is there anything I could have done differently?"
Y a-t-il quelque chose que j'aurais pu faire différemment ?
Opens the door to constructive criticism without sounding insecure.
Asking a colleague
"Would you mind taking a look at this before I send it?"
Ça te dérangerait d'y jeter un œil avant que je l'envoie ?
Asks for review without pressure. "Would you mind" is softer than "Can you check."
"I'd value your perspective on this."
J'apprécierais ton point de vue là-dessus.
"Value your perspective" — flattering and specific. Better than "What do you think?"
After receiving feedback
"Thanks for being honest — that's really helpful."
Merci pour ta franchise — c'est vraiment utile.
Rewards honesty. Makes them more likely to give you honest feedback again.
"I'll take that on board."
J'en prends note. / Je vais en tenir compte.
British expression meaning "I'll consider it seriously." Professional and graceful.
Common mistake
"What do you think?" is too vague — people give vague answers. Be specific: "What did you think of the way I structured the argument?" Also avoid "Tell me what's wrong with it" — sounds like you expect criticism. Say "I'd appreciate any suggestions for improvement."
