Longer texts on the TOEIC — articles, reports, press releases

TOEIC Part 7 includes longer texts (150-250 words) with 4-5 questions. These test reading speed and inference. French speakers tend to read every word — on TOEIC, this wastes critical time. You need a system.

The 3-step reading system

Step 1: Read the questions first
Know what you're looking for before you read the text. Underline keywords in the questions.
Step 2: Skim the text for structure
Read the first sentence of each paragraph. Get the topic of each section. 15 seconds maximum.
Step 3: Scan for answers
Go back to the questions. Find the keyword from each question in the text. Read the sentence around it. Answer.

"Implied" vs "indicated" questions

"What is indicated?" = the answer is stated directly in the text. Scan and match. "What is implied?" or "What can be inferred?" = the answer is NOT stated directly. You have to combine two pieces of information or read between the lines.

Example: Text says "Sales rose 15% in Q3" and "The new marketing campaign launched in July."
Implied: The marketing campaign contributed to the sales increase. This is never stated — you infer it from the timing.

Press release vocabulary

announced (a annoncé), unveiled (a dévoilé), acquired (a acquis), projected (prévu), revenue (chiffre d'affaires — not "revenu" which means income), fiscal year (exercice fiscal).

Common mistake

French speakers confuse "revenue" (chiffre d'affaires — total sales) with "revenu" (income — what you take home). On TOEIC, "revenue" always means company sales, never personal income.
